Weapon Attack Strength Mechanics

    Preface
I'm trying to evaluate the viability of a Hand Cannon Kick Ranger PVE Build. I needed to be able to compare Hand Cannons to Muskets and Revolvers. To do so I needed to find out how the physical attack strength of a weapon was calculated. While I believe LHCGreg will data mine this once he gets the item database working, until then, this will provide an initial start to the work.

    Findings
Weapon physical attack strength seems to be calculated in a rather straightforward manner. The formula is:
    Physical Attack = WeaponPhysicalAttackCoefficient * (Level + 1 + RarityBonus).
    • WeaponPhysicalAttackCoefficient is a calculated value that is specific to a weapon type.
    • Level is the level of the item.
    • RarityBonus is 0 for Blues, 5 for Purples.

    WeaponPhysicalAttackCoeffficients
    Hand Cannons: 8.40
    Muskets: 7.70
    Revolver: 6.66

    Stat Formula
Insufficient data to determine this yet. Rough guess is that Hand Cannons have 5 more strength than Muskets. Also the progression follows the same Rarity Bonus as Physical Attack Strength.

    Magical Attack Strength
I believe this would use the same formula as Physical Attack Strength, but the Coefficients would be different.

    Conclusions
Hand Cannons have 9% more Physical Attack than Muskets.
Hand Cannons have 26% more Physical Attack than Revolvers.
Muskets have 15.6% more Physical Attack than Revolvers.

Hand Cannons cost 25% more mana for Physical Attack Skills.
Muskets cost 10% more mana for Physical Attack Skills.

Based on raw damage alone, Hand Cannons are equally mana efficient compared to Revolvers.
Based on raw damage alone, Muskets are 5% more mana efficient compared to Revolvers.

    So, couple of things.
    1. Can you not quote the entire post without adding anything? It is a waste of space. I don't mean to be mean about this, but it bugs me.
    2. I disagree with your claims about kicks.

    Data
    Weapon - Mana Cost

    Jack Spike Level 5
    Launcher Level 47
    • No Weapon - 4
    • Revolver - 7
    • Hand Cannon - 8

    Mechanic Level 47
    Jack Spike 1
    • No Weapon - 3
    • Auto Gun - 3
    • Revolver - 5

Changing weapons changes Jack Spike's mana cost. Autoguns lower physical weapon mana costs by 30%. Hand Cannons increase physical weapon costs by 25%. Revolvers do not lower physical weapon mana costs. Jack Spike's mana cost reflects this. So, either Jack Spike is not a kick, or kicks are effected by physical weapon mana cost modifiers.

<EDIT: Changed to reflect DD's actual hypotheses and to include conclusions and discussion.>

    Dice Dragon's Hypotheses v2
    • Fixed Damage skills are NOT affected by * Weapon Mana Cost modifiers.
    • Fixed and Percentage skills are NOT affected by * Weapon Mana Cost Modifiers.
    • Percentage skills ARE affected by * Weapon Mana Cost Modifiers.

This seems to be supported by the data I have found so far. Interestingly enough, if a skill's mana cost is 5 and you wield a musket, increasing it by 10%, the mana cost should be 5.5. However, the listed value is still 5. Whether this is due to rounding in the display or actually the adjusted cost is unknown.

    Conclusion:
Assuming that DD is correct and skills with Fixed components are not adjusted by the mana cost properties of weapons, then Hand Cannons are superior (on the basis of raw damage and mana efficiency) for all Fixed Skills and Percentage and Fixed Skills. For Percentage only skills, the Hand Cannon is equivalent to the revolver (on the basis of raw damage and mana efficiency).

What does this mean for a female Ranger?
Headshot, Western Fire, Revenger, Rising Shot, Marilyn Rose, Moving Shot, Gun Dance, Death Hawk, Spriggan, and Aerial Fire are all percentage only skills, and thus will be equally efficient for Hand Cannons and Revolvers.

Triple Clutch, Topspin Kick, Needle Sobat, and Sonic Spike are Percentage and Fixed skills and will directly benefit from the lack of the penalty to physical damage skill mana costs from Hand Cannons. Maximizing these skills would be the best way to take advantage of the damage bonus from Hand Cannons.
