Postpone Advancement?

Is it possible to postpone a character's advancement, at level 18, for a few levels? Would it be wise to do that if said character was going to be totally puny immediately after advancing? I want to make a magic exorcist, but the lack of abilities at level 18 is scary.

I few lvl's won't make a noticeable difference, but it's not that bad early on, as long as you have mp. Just find a party and you won't have a problem, plus Holy Amulet and Furious Grab is all you need.

You can postpone a character's advancement. You can even not advance at all, if you so wish.

But it is recommended that you advance as early as you can so that when you gain each level, you will get the appropriate permanent stats for your subclass.

I don't want to go pull out the exact stats advancement, but i'm gonna make an hypothetical example to put in context.

Say a normal priest gains +1 str and +1int for every level up. But if you're a monk, you gain +1.5 str and 0.5 int for every level up. If you're a crusader, you gain +0.5 str and +1.5 int for every level up. These stats are permanent.

So, with that said, you should advance as soon as you can, but a few postponed levels won't make a significant difference.

Actually Soushin, I could be wrong but I believe it was tested and the stats you lose from not advancing will be added back. So lets say you lose a couple points in str because you advance at 22. When you do advance your stats will look like you advanced at 18.

I can test that right now, have a lvl 22 gunner I was gonna delete

This was already tested a very long time ago, although things may have changed since then. And the results of the test was that the stats don't readjust when you advance. This can easily by noticed just by looking at your HP when you advance.

For more details about stats growth, take a look at this thread.

If NuMbA would make the test, it'll confirm it. Just check if your HP change when you advance.

i see what yall are saying. but how far can classes go with the basic skills?? cause i have like 3 classes that im not gonna advance till like 30-35.(currently at 25ish) but u think thats to late?

Probably. Just do the math and see what you're losing. Plus 25 is adequate to have decent skills.

If you're planning on advancing to a class, there's really no reason for you to delay it to like 25. You gain new subclass skills at 18, 20, 25 and so on. It's a lot easier early on to learn how to work your class rather than later. I know the lack of skills sort of suck early on, but you really don't get any benefits for delaying your advancement (provided you want to advance at all). If you want to advance at 20, I guess it's okay. The stat loss wouldn't be that much, but do try and advance as early as possible.

Just checked, it doesn't change your stats

As long as it has no permanent effects, I think this is a really good idea.

Many classes are weaker for quite awhile after advancement, and you'd be far better off with a build of all the strongest pre advancement skills. Plus, that means you can use all SP immediately; some classes require saving a lot for cubes. More SP spent can often be better damage and utility. And then you get to reset it all at advancement.
  12. NuMbA Light's Out

The thing is there are permanent effects
  13. Jormungandr SUPER SWORD

When you say that, does it mean if you advance late your stats get changed to as if you advanced at 18, or is it you lose the stat bonuses that you should have gained by advancing at 18?
  14. NuMbA Light's Out

Your stats stay exactly the same, you gain the same stat bonuses as a gunner until you advance.

Okay. So yeah, 1 to 2 levels is fine. 5+? You're just asking to gimp yourself.
